Kröller-Müller Museum – Léger and the Rooftops of Paris

In November 2022, the exhibition Fernand Léger and the Rooftops of Paris opened at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Netherlands. The exhibition was prompted by the presentation of a recently discovered painting by Fernand Léger from the Triton Collection Foundation. Following years of restoration, the work was revealed on the reverse of another painting by Léger, Le Quatorze Juillet (1914), which had been part of the collection for many years.

Together with the museum and external curator Sjraar van Heugten, the Foundation developed an exhibition that was on view at the museum for four months. The exhibition was accompanied by a publication that explored the project in greater depth and described the restoration process.

The project is a fine example of how the discovery of a historical masterpiece was made possible, but also contributed to art-historical knowledge through research of Léger’s oeuvre and the period in which he painted the work. Through the exhibition, the public was given the opportunity to see and admire the painting firsthand.
